bokbinding
Print of the massive church sign poster ( and visit to a church sign maker!)
I was supposed to print my massice 50x100in poster at print space in Shoreditch, but they were very expencive. After telling the print lady in south London about the price, she gave me the number to another printer in the same area as she lived. They ironicly are oine of the most used church sign printers in London, and they also do massive color prints fairly cheap.
I went down to theyre office ( located between two warehouse churches..), and had a talk with them, and they could do it for 54 pounds (instead of 250 pounds).
The colour quality was not perfect though, but as the poster is about the collection more then stunning photos I think it could be justified.
In the end I was a bit diaspointed about the result, but it was no bad. If I wish to, this can always use this print for the hand in and to find out if I feel like doing any changes on it, and then reprint it in nicer quality for the exhibition.
Off to the printer!
Thank god! I found a printer that canprint for me! Shes a private printer far out in South London, and she prints on alomst yesterday. I was there today, and after two meeting with her, and a lot of experimenting with inks and possitioning, we found out how to do it right. I stayed up all of last night with no sleep, so when I got there today, and were waiting in the sofa with her dogs I fell asleep for a litle while. It was a bit embarising, but she was a very down to earth nice lady, and gave me tee, busicuts and a newly baked bread to bring home. Such a sweet lady. And the print came out almost perfect int the end.
book in the making
Ive decided for concept, format, paper, font and printer- yeay! So then all thats left to do is design it- or finalize it.
Why Ive made my decisions:
CONCEPT:
A5 book dispalying all the quotes and biblical texts Ive found on the church signs that I have collected. Looking at the information Ive gathered about church signs, Ive decided to use some of the most common aestheitcs in the book. I will use the french binding teqniqe- where you fold a paper, and bind the book with the ends of the papers (where its cut)- so that there is a fold that you can not open. On the front of the folds I will put the texts, but then, on the inside of the folds I will print the signs where the quote has been taken from- but you have to rip the paper open to see it. If everything goes right I will print the book in bible paper- so in that way it goes both with the theme in general, but also gives a nice see though effect for the reader of the book. I want to make it so that the reader wants to rip up the pages.
TEXT HIERACHY:
The church signs I found were all over the place in terms of text hierachies, but one of the elemnts that I saw most frequently was the ranged centered text (sometimes together with ranged left or right text, but mostly by it selves. After looking in bible verse books etc, my conclution is that mid ranged is also the most common used, and I felt that it was the right thing to keep it simple and right and use mid ranged through out in the book instead of changing around. could go for left ranged to, but mid range works best with short poem like texts like the ones im using.
TYPEFACE:
I wanted to use a font that was linked to my content, and to Christianity. Many of the texts are very heavy and preach-full in a way, and some of them are more funny or almost ironic, but I still felt that they should all be treated with a font that shows them respect and treats them as equally important. In the beginning I was also thinking about using one of the most used fonts, such as Gill Sans, DIN, Times New Roman or Helvetica, but after making some layouts and talking with my tutor, I came to the conclusion that even if the church signs I photograph often has bad fonts and so called bad typography- that doesn't mean that I should treat my work in the same way. I can find other ways to show my research in this project than to only think about my my research when I make my own designs.
I ended up looking at ttwo fonts, one called BERTHOLD (used in a few of the signs actually, as well as a couple of broseaures I was sent from some of the church sign makers), and one toher called PERPETUA, wich is almost a bit more gothic looking, and had been used a lot on gravestones etc.
Even though I think Perpetua is a bit more interesting to look at, I felt that Berthold had the qualities that worked best for my book. After looking around on the diferent versions of the font, I found the Berthold deluxe veriosn, wich had big capials in the same size as lover case letters. After experimenting with doferent sizes that was the best version of the font. I tried diferent sized, first big, and then small, and ended up with size 18 letters, and 18 in line spaceing, as the original spacing is very big. The letter spacing staiyed at the seetings. I chose to use black ink. I now feel that it has a bit of a church book/ bible astehic over it.
IMAGES:
I tried to use both balck white, and colour, and came to the comcluton that color was the right choise. In terms of positioning, I wanted them to be treated different then the consistent positioning of the texts, and therefor chose to only follow one grid- and that was the outline grid- so the signs are pretty much on diferent possitions through out the book. I did make sure the photos on each page looked good together when opening the fold s a spead though. Size wise, theyre all realitively small, but not in any exact measurments, as theyre all in diferent sizes and shapes originally.
PAPER:
I wanted to use thin paper, and after looking around in the paper shop, and testing on diferent sorts of paper, I stuck to me taht I should use bible paper. First of all its among the finest thinnest papers, but it also looks really good, and theme wise fits perfect to my project. Bible is something all of the churches has in common.
PRINITNG:
The bible paper needs to be ink yet printed, double sided, and as there are hardly any printers who does this, that seems to be my biggest problem at the moment. hopefully i will find something very soon...
COVER:
I want to make it realitvely simple. Off white, whith black text, maby a small red deail some where (black, white and red are the most traditional bible cover colors). The book will be called WLCOME TO WORSHIP, as it suits the project, as well as containing the most used verbs in church signs (welcome and worship)
BINDING:
I think I will try to learn how to bookbind it myself. Theres a bookbinding space at college, and a teacher there who can help me learn it, so hopefully he has time to see me!

QUOTE BOOK
Today I had a tutorial with Paulus, and after the meeting things cleared up in my mind a bit.
When it comes to my additional book/ books about my statistics and research Ive decided to make minimum three books about some of the themes (on in each book)
It will be one book displaying the quotes. I will use the french binding technique- wich allows me to put photos of the quotes on the inside/ backside of the quote Im using, as a surpise/ extra touch to the consept. It will be printed on really thin, slightly transparent bible paper, and Ive found a printer in south London that hopefully can do it for me.
I would also like to make a book about text hiarchies, where I use my infogrpahics that highlights the diferent parts of the sign texts in colour codes. possible I will use the french biding techinque here to but on a more transparent paper maby. Not sure about this yet.
Im thinking about doing one book about the diferent fonts, simply using transparent paper, dividing all the diferent fonts on about 20 pages- so as a whole they fill the whole square- but the ones in the back beeing hard to see and the ones in the front beeing clear. I think it will look visually nice, but I might need to think about the words I choose to take oictures of to give it a deeper meaning somehow. Maby I could use my verbs?
next book idea would be anothe french binding technique version, but focusing on the visual aspects such as form, colour, location, etc etc etc. pretty much suming up every signs individual characterisics. The text about this would be on the front, and the image of the sign would be hidden inside. I could also put in several "signs" on each side, number them, and then you have to open up the page to look at the signs.
LAsgt idea is a logo book- where there will first be a blck white lined version of the logos, with name of the church of the logo under illustration, and on the insdie/ back of paper the real logo incl colours will be displayed.
Im not sure if these are all strong enough, nor if I ctully have time to make them, but I will try to do as many as possible.

COVER EXPERIMENTATION
Ive used Gill sans, the most used church sign typeface, and the title " WELCOME TO WORSHIP", as that is the two most common verbs used on church signs in London
This is clearly just experimentation. Im considering doing it in a5 and a4, or a5 and a6, and I think it would be nice if they sort of go together, as they in many ways work as one piece together with the photo graphy piece.
UNIT 14, PIECE 1 CONCEPT
So, today I spoke with my photo tutor Gary about my phoographic piece, and Ive decided how I want to present it.
I went from my original idea withc was to show the photos devided on 6 A1 sheets, to changing the format to one massive print (1270 cm x 254 cm)
After all the work I feel the piece needs to be presented in the best possible way, and it deserves to be shown on a large scale like this.
Ive found a printer that can do the job, printspace in Kingsland Road, though it is pretty expencive. It lands on 224 pounds + VAT. After talking with my dad about it, he wished to sponsor me on the printing.
Im pretty sure this is what Im going for, but I will have one last talk about it with my main tutor Paulus tomorrow before I make a final decission.

Interview with a church-sign designer
Today I called All Nations Church in Clapham to talk with them about their great church advertisement signs. After speaking with the very nice and ploite secretary Lydia, she let me know that it was in fact the pastor and founder of the Church Leslie who had started the sign tradition about 20 years ago, and was stil the mastermind and designer behind them.
She gave me his home number and I gave him a call. He was a very nice, older man who semed like a very social inteligent and polite. He knew how to express himself in a clever and smart way to say it like that.
This is what I got out of the conversation (taken from email I sent the pastor after our phone conversation):
- Main goal with the signs is to catch the eye of people passing the church- you've got one second to get attention, so its important to make the most out of it.
You aim to provoke people, no matter what if people reacts to the signs positive or negative- as the signs either way has made people think and reflect over what the signs are communicating.
You are the designer and concept maker of the designs, and have been doing this for the past 20 years.
The signs consists of yellow squares that stands outside the church towards the highway permanently, and you change the text on them every two months or so. The letters are vinyl letters. You make the decisions when it comes to the text hierarchy, and the usage of colors and words that might stand out visually. Then you go to your printer to get consultation, and they help you scale and make the final decisions so that they fit your format as good as possible.
What you do is to come up with the quotes, witch you try to make contemporary and often humoristic to not scare people away, as your impression is that many people are afraid of religion. You can understand why people think like that, and you, and you're church community don't look at All Nations church as "religious", but as a forum and place to be in touch with God, and you look at God as a friend.
You normally come up with the text yourself, but in a couple of occasions you have used quotes from the bible as well. In terms of inspiration you have not been looking at other churches and their approach, but you are aware that there are other church communities that has a similar kind of approach.
You have had a lot of feedback on your signs, mostly positive and some few negative ones from people that don't believe in God and that gets negatively provoked. When you get new mwmbers in the church, many of them say that it was the signs that made them join, often because they felt they described the church as a welcoming and friendly environment.
After we talked I sent him these aditional questions:
1: Have you got some examples of other quotes you have used?
2: Have you got any pictures available from your earlier slogans?
3: Have you got any ideas for future signs?

QUOTES/ TEXTS
These are the textx and religious verses from the signs. Im not sure wether to use all, or make a selction of them, and neither if I should use the fonts and arrangements used in the signs, or re make them.
hmm..
Im also trying to decide wether to go for a A3 sice, or smaller. It would be nice to use really thin paper, as a referace to the bible, o settled light coloured/ offwhite paper.
